Where did the English German family come from? What is the English coat of arms/family crest? When did the German family first arrive in the United States? Where did the various branches of the family go? What is the history of the family name?

The ancient name German is a Norman name that would have been developed in England after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. This name was a name given to a person of German descent, or a person who was associated with that country through trade or other means. Another derivation of the name suggests that it derives from the Old French given name Germain. This name was borne by a popular French saint from the 5th century, and also meant of the same stock, or related to. German is a classic example of an polygenetic surname, which is a surname that was developed in a number of different locations and adopted by various families independently.

Before the last few hundred years the English language had no fixed system of spelling rules. For that reason, spelling variations occurred commonly in Anglo Norman surnames. Over the years, many variations of the name German were recorded, including German, Germans, Jermain, Jarman and others.

First found in Essex where they had been granted lands after the Norman Conquest in 1066 A.D.

The unstable environment in England at this time caused numerous families to board ships and leave in search of opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad in places like Ireland, Australia, and particularly the New World. The voyage was extremely difficult, however, and only taken at great expense. The cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels caused many to arrive diseased and starving, not to mention destitute from the enormous cost. Still opportunity in the emerging nations of Canada and the United States was far greater than at home and many went on to make important contributions to the cultures of their adopted countries. An examination of many early immigration records reveals that people bearing the name German arrived in North America very early: Thomas German who landed in Maryland in 1654; John German settled in Pennsylvania, with his wife Margaret, and two daughters, in 1683; Thomas German settled in Maryland in 1660.
